LafargeHolcim’s Community Development Centre (CDC) is located beside its integrated cement plant at Chhatak in Sunamganj, which is the hub of all its community development activities as a part of their CSR activities.

Their CDC is home to a primary school, where children can receive free education up to grade five; a medical center, where people can receive free medical services and medicines; and also a skill development training center, where both men and women are provided sustainable skill development training for employment and income generation. The training is provided by professionals of the relevant fields.

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited’s (LHBL) has undertaken wide ranging Sustainable Community Development activities around its integrated cement plant at Chhatak in Sunamganj. The company is committed to ensure sustainable development of the economy, community and environment through responsible business operations, environmental management and community development initiatives in the area of education, healthcare, skill development and infrastructure development.

Healthcare: One of the focus areas of the Company’s CSR initiatives is Healthcare. The medical center located in CDC has a qualified physician and a paramedic to provide free medical assistance to the local community. They now have access to primary health-care that includes consultation, medicinal support, vaccination and capacity building through health counseling.

Education: Earlier children of the local communities in Chhatak never went to any school as there was no schooling facility nearby and the guardians lacked motivation to educate their children. LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited was able to change the situation by offering a primary school in its community development center – “LHBL Community Welfare School”

Skill Development: Creating employment opportunities for the locals by providing free sustainable skill development training has always been one of the key focus areas of the company’s CSR activities. It provides Small Enterprise Development training in tailoring, embroidery, candle making, solar power panel installations, mobile handset repairing and the necessary start-up capital to the women of the community as part of the company’s effort to drive women empowerment. Once living as dependent housewives, women in the project affected community at Chhatak now have sufficient opportunities for empowerment through these income generating activities.

Special Contributions: LHBL is committed to stand beside the communities during their crisis period. In 2022 the company distributed essential food items among 6,000 families. The employees of the company also donated their one day salary for the flood affected people in Chhatak. The company also came forward in repairing the households, community roads, school infrastructures etc. One of the major concerns for the communities in Chhatak was scarcity of safe drinking water. The company installed 10 rain water harvesting facilities for the communities where at least 50 families now can collect safe drinking water without any hassle. At least 260,000 liters of rain water can be filtered in a year which can meet the drinking water demand for 500 people round the year.
